What
Does Model UN Do??
Teams of two delegates choose and represent a country, and are given
two issues to consider by the conference administration.
The students research the issues, and figure out how the country
they represent would address the issues. They then attend
the conference, engage in debate, form coalitions, and negotiate
resolutions. The conferences are moderated by a chair, and a deputy
chair records the contributions of the delegations. The most productive
delegations are awarded honorable mention, outstanding delegation, or
best delegation. The best delegation wins the gavel the chair has used
for the conference.
The more advanced delegates can take part in single delegation
conferences. The advanced delegates often consider non-UN questions.
These have included historical events such as the Congress of Vienna
(circa 1815) and the Versailles Peace Conference (1920-21). They have
also included Avatar, Star Trek, the Crusades, and future topics such
as the Middle East in 2050. There are also crisis committees where
delegates have to react to changing events. Sometimes these events are
actual historical events, other times scenarios are developed based on
possible outcomes of current events.
It is a rewarding activity, in which students broaden their horizons
and learn how to develop policy from differening viewpoints. Delegates
also learn such practical skills as negotiation and parliamentary
procedure.
